Why We Don’t Make a Rechargeable Coffee Grinder Motor at GAWOODY?

One question I get asked quite often is:

Why doesn't GAWOODY make a rechargeable or portable version of its motor kits? 😅

So I’d like to take this opportunity to share some thoughts behind our decision:

1. Insufficient Power and Torque

The main reason is that current rechargeable power sources simply don’t provide enough torque for specialty coffee grinding.

With the growing popularity of light roasts — especially Nordic-style — and the demand for fine espresso grinding, the motor needs to deliver strong, consistent power. Unfortunately, most battery-powered systems fall short.

Even if a rechargeable kit can grind the beans, it tends to do so much slower. For example:Our standard GAWOODY motor kit grinds 20g of beans at a 30-click setting on a Comandante in about 45 seconds.

A similar rechargeable version under the same load could easily take over 2 minutes — slower than grinding by hand!

2. Consistency Where It Matters Most

The Comandante grinder is smooth and relatively easy to turn manually, especially with medium to dark roasts.

But the real challenge arises with light roasts, which can be surprisingly tough to grind — even with a premium grinder. And that’s exactly when you’d want motor assistance to kick in.

I don’t want to offer a motor kit that works well for “easy” beans, but fails when you actually need it the most.

Our goal is to provide a solution that supports consistent, reliable grinding — regardless of roast level or grind size.

3. Embracing Manual Grinding (And Why We Designed It That Way)

Even though we make motor kits, I still recommend grinding by hand from time to time.

That’s why all GAWOODY motor kits are designed with a freestanding structure — so you can easily detach and hand-grind whenever you like.

Why? Because coffee roasting is about more than just flavor — it’s about feel.

When you grind by hand, you can sense how well the inside of the bean has been roasted. This tactile feedback is incredibly valuable, especially if you roast your own beans. It adds another dimension to your understanding of coffee.

A Note on Portability

Most people asking for a portable version simply want the convenience of use while traveling — which is totally understandable!

But unless you’re grinding on the go very frequently, I’d say:

Why not enjoy the hand grinding experience just this once?

After all… it is a hand grinder. 😉
